About NESLAND
Nestled between the majestic mountains and the open sea, Nesland is a place where history, nature, and tranquility meet. Once a thriving fishing village, this remote and picturesque hamlet on the southern coast of Flakstadøya in Lofoten carries a rich maritime heritage dating back to the 19th century. Today, we are working to restore and breathe new life into this historic fishing village, preserving its charm while making it an inviting place for visitors.
A Living Piece of Lofoten’s Fishing History
From 1858, Auster Nesland grew into a bustling fishing station, strategically located near the fertile fishing grounds of Vestfjorden. However, as the fishing industry modernized and motorized boats became the norm, Nesland’s harbor proved less suitable, leading to its decline. By 1958, the fishing station was officially abandoned. Now, decades later, we are reviving the essence of Nesland, making it a place where visitors can experience Lofoten’s past while enjoying modern comforts.
OUR CAFÈ AND Guest ROOMS
In addition to restoring the village, we have established a cozy café where you can enjoy delicious homemade sweets and freshly brewed coffee with breathtaking views of the ocean. We also offer guest rooms in the main house for those who wish to extend their stay and experience the unique atmosphere of this historic place.
A Place of Cultural Significance
Despite its quiet nature today, Nesland remains a place of historical and cultural importance. In 2016, its historic stone harbors (steinvorre) were protected by the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage, recognizing their role in Norway’s fishing and maritime history.
Stay in an Authentic Rorbu
To truly immerse yourself in the history of Nesland, you can stay in a traditional rorbu—a genuine fisherman’s cabin that has been carefully restored to offer both authenticity and comfort. Wake up to the sound of the sea, breathe in the crisp coastal air, and experience life as the fishermen of Lofoten once did.
Explore Nesland’s Natural Beauty
Nesland is surrounded by dramatic landscapes and untouched wilderness. The area offers a scenic hiking trail connecting Nesland to Nusfjord – a two-hour trek filled with breathtaking coastal views and the raw beauty of Lofoten’s rugged terrain. Nearby, you’ll also find unique glacial potholes (jettegryter) and the only remaining original watermill in Lofoten.
A Peaceful Escape with a Rich Story
Whether you’re seeking a historical journey, an outdoor adventure, or simply a place to disconnect and enjoy nature, Nesland offers a unique experience far from the crowds. With its ongoing restoration, welcoming café, authentic rorbu accommodations, and stunning surroundings, this hidden gem invites you to explore, reflect, and become part of its revival.
